बेंगलुरूःअजीज प्रेमजी विश्वविद्यालय अगले वर्ष से शुरु होगा

आईटी सर्विस प्रोवाइडर कंपनी विप्रो के चेयरमैन अजीम प्रेमजी ने देश में शिक्षा के स्तर पर सुधार के लिए करीब नौ हजार करोड़ रुपये की राशि दान की है। यह राशि किसी भी भारतीय द्वारा चैरिटि मे दी गई रकम में सबसे बड़ी है। इस चैरिटी से अजीम प्रेमजी ने कुछ बौद्धिक आलोचकों की इस बात को भी गलत ठहरा दिया है कि भारतीय बिजनेसमैन सिर्फ विदेशी संस्थाओं को ही मोटी रकम दान मे देते हैं।

इस चैरिटी पर प्रेमजी ने कहा कि अच्छी शिक्षा बेहतर मानव और समाज के लिए बहुत जरूरी है। हम भारत में शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में महत्त्वपूर्ण योगदान करना चाहते हैं और इसके जरिए बेहतर समाज की कल्पना करते हैं।

प्रेमजी ने अपने करीब 8,846 करोड़ रुपये के 21.3 करोड़ इक्विटी शेयरों को अजीम प्रेमजी फाउंडेशन को ट्रांसफर करने की घोषणा की। यह ट्रस्ट विभिन्न सामाजिक और गैर-लाभकारी उद्देशयों के लिए रकम मुहैया कराती है। यह ट्रस्ट अजीम प्रेमजी फाउंडेशन की ओर से आयोजित होने वाली विभिन्न गतिविधियों को फंड मुहैया कराता है। इनमें प्रस्तावित अजीम प्रेमजी विश्वविद्यालय भी है, जिसका मकसद देश में उच्च स्तर की शिक्षण की सुविधा मुहैया कराना है।

गौरतलब है कि 2001 से ही अजीम प्रेमजी फाउंडेशन विभिन्न राज्य सरकारों के साथ शिक्षा में सुधार के लिए साझेदारी कर रहा है। फाउंडेशन अब तक 25,000 स्कूलों, जिनमें करीब 25 लाख बच्चे पढ़ते हैं, के साथ काम कर चुका है।

हाल ही में फाउंडेशन को कर्नाटक सरकार से राज्य में अजीम प्रेमजी विश्वविद्यालय स्थापित करने की मंजूरी मिली है। यह विश्वविद्यालय बेंगलुरु में बनेगा और 2011 तक शुरू होने की उम्मीद है। इस फाउंडेशन ने शहर से बाहर सरजापुर रोड पर 75 एकड़ जमीन चिह्नि ï त की है, जोविप्रो के हेड ऑफिस से करीब 15 किमी की दूरी पर है। हालांकि अभी निवेश के बारे में पूरी जानकारी नहीं दी गई, लेकिन विश्वविद्यालय के संचालन पर सालाना 250 करोड़ रुपये निवेश का अनुमान है(नवभारत टाइम्स,बेंगलुरू,2.12.2010)।

In the largest act of philanthropy by an Indian,Wipro chairman Azim Premji will give about Rs 8,846 crore ($2 billion) to improve school education in India.Other charitable donations by any person or corporation in India pale in comparison to this massive endowment.It effectively silences critics who say Indian billionaires are measly donors,and focus on big-name western universities rather than addressing Indias problems.

Premji,Indias third richest man with a net worth of $18 billion,will transfer 213 million equity shares of Wipro Ltd,held by a few entities controlled by him,to the Azim Premji Trust.It will fund educational activities of the Azim Premji Foundation (APF) which works mainly with schools in rural India.He had previously transferred over Rs 700 crore to the APF.

Premji said more may come in future. Im completely committed to supporting the larger ambition of creating required social change. 

The money will be transferred to the trust by next Tuesday and Wipros former strategy chief K R Lakshminarayana will be its chief endowment officer.Even at a conservative return of 8%- 12%,it should generate annual returns of $160-250 million (Rs 750-1,150 crore),which will be used to run APF initiatives,including Bangalores Azim Premji University.

We believe that good education is crucial to building a just,equitable,humane and sustainable society.We want to contribute significantly towards improvement of education in India,and through that towards building a better society, he said.

All our efforts,including the university we are setting up,are focused on the underprivileged and disadvantaged sections of our society.Our experience of the past 10 years has motivated us to significantly scale up our initiatives,across multiple relevant dimensions. So far,the nineyear-old APF has worked extensively in six districts two in Uttarakhand,two in Rajasthan and two in Karnataka.

Dileep Ranjekar,co-CEO of APF called this the beginning of APFs second life. The current phase were launching is based on 10 years of experience wherein we realized what needs to be done to scale this in a concrete manner. His co-CEO Anurag Behar said, The aim is to increase the deep focus to 50 more districts across India. Such a huge financial commitment has been made mainly because a university cannot be run without a large endowment.For example,if AP University were to follow the Tata Institute of Social Sciences model which meets just 14%-15 % of its costs from student fees,the AP University will need to meet 85% of costs from non-fee based resources. The foundations significant increase in scale and its clear focus on social purposes will require a long-term financial commitment,which is the purpose this endowment will serve, Premji said.The varsity,offering PG courses in education and development,will start with 200 students in 2011 and scale to 2,000 in 4-5 years.

Will rich Indians follow example 

Will Premji inspire rich Indians to part with their wealth Thats a billion-dollar question but the American example may have the answer.Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathway are persuading wealthy Americans to give at least 50% of their wealth to charity.Theyre even asking people to take a pledge they will do so,and with considerable success.In India,the tech sector has led the way in giving away some of its wealth.All Infosys co-founders have charitable arms.
